Update: 7 More Free Virtualization Tools

Recently updated in Webinar about what's new in the free virtualization tools landscape. Over time, older free tools disappear and new free tools are launched. In many cases the newer tools are better and more innovative but, on the other hand, there are always free tools that are the de facto standard for that task.
There are well over 50 free tools available for vSphere, but I'm not covering all of them here. Instead, here are some of the more interesting new ones recently released for vSphere and Fusion.

Access Facebook on any Mobile Without the Internet

Do you have an old mobile phone, like the Nokia 1100, that has no browser and can do little more than make phone calls? Or are you stuck in some remote place where there’s no Internet or no other form of data (EGDE/GPRS/3G) connectivity is available?
Not a problem. You can still use your Facebook account in India by dialing *325# (or *fbk#) from your mobile phone – this service requires no data plan or Internet and it will even work on phones of the Stone Age. Here’s a quick tour:

Use Facebook without the Data Plan

Facebook India has partnered with Fonetwish to bring Facebook on every mobile phone without requiring any apps or even the Internet.
You dial the *325# number, then enter your Facebook username and password and you are in. You can then send number based commands to access various features of Facebook, chat with friends who are online, add new people to your friends list, and more.
I played with the service for some time and it was a nice experience overall. If there were a Unix-like shell interface for Facebook, it would be much similar. Fonetwish says that this service is currently available for Airtel, Aircel, Idea and Tata Docomo users in India.
It may be too much work to read your Facebook news feed stories one by one but this is a good option to quickly update your Facebook status or for chatting with friends who are online. The price is reasonable too – you just have pay a subscription fee of 1.00 per day for unlimited usage.
Related: If you have an old mobile phone, you can search Google by SMS without requiring a data plan.

Mikogo: Cross-Platform Desktop Sharing And Web Conferencing Tool

Mikogo linux

Mikogo is a freeware, cross-platform desktop sharing toolStarting with the latest version 4 - released a few days ago -, Mikogo is also available for Linux, in addition to the already existing Windows and Mac clients. There is also a web client but it lacks most of the Mikogo features so it can only be used for viewing.

Mikogo can be used for web conferencing, online meetings, presentations or remote support and comes with built-in file transfer and chat features. It doesn't come with native audio conferencing but it does support it through regular phone calls. For more info, see the Mikogo audio conferencing page.

What's really cool about Mikogo is that multiple participants can join a session and you can easily switch who has the control or which desktop is used for the presentation. There's also a a built-in recording tool so you can easily record your sessions.

Just like in TeamViewer, the connection is made based on a conference number so you don't have to know the IP address of any of the participants. This is an important feature because it makes using Mikogo a lot easier and works even if multiple computers share the same public IP.

Also, since security is important, you'll be glad to know that Mikogo uses 256-bit AES encryption for the desktop client and the Mikogo website uses 128-bit SSL encryption.

The Linux version of Mikogo still needs some work: the remote keyboard combinations feature doesn't work yet and the user interface doesn't integrate too well with the desktop. Also, some features are unfortunately only available for Windows, such as the whiteboard or the option to adjust the speed / quality. But this is the first Linux release so hopefully these features will be available in the Linux client soon.

You're probably wondering about the speed: well, it my test (I've only tested it on Linux!), Mikogo was kind of slow, compared to, let's say TeamViewer. But this may be related to my Internet connection so I can't really give a verdict here. But Mikogo comes with a lot of cool features so you should really give it a try - if you do, let us know how it works for you!

Download Mikogo - to use Mikogo on Linux, download the archive, extract it and double click the "mikogo" executable.

Downlaod the Best Simulators from here

Downlaod the Best Simulators from here

I am currently revising for an EMC exam and part of the course material involves doing some training on the Navisphere simulator. No problems, except where on earth do you download the simulator software? I searched for ages before finding out that you only get access to it on EMC PowerLink if you are an EMC employee, partner or you have bought the relevant training. I had done the latter but still couldn’t get it downloaded for some reason, that’s when a google search turned up a link to the following page which required no credentials, EMC Education Services product simulators.

Terminal Server Client Simulation

Smclient formally named "Terminal Server Client Simulation", is a tool designed for simple simulation of multiple client connections to a Terminal Server.

Like many testing and simulation tools, however, its usability goes far beyond the original design goal. Smclient enables automated logon/logoff/disconnect, with activity which can be controlled by a decently-sized scripting language. Since it displays the mstsc.exe GUI, you can even start a session and intervene. It has some excellent verbose debugging options, so running it while attempting to connect to a remote system will allow you to do some nice diagnostics.

6 Free Tools To Help You Run Windows Applications On Linux

6 Free Tools To Help You Run Windows Applications On Linux

When switching from Windows to a more secured Linux operating system, you may come up with many difficulties. Like for example you might not find the applications you needed for doing your daily work. Although you can find any and all the replacements of a Windows application on Linux, there is a way through which you can run your favorite Windows application on your Linux operating system. Here we have compiled a list of 6 free tools that will help you run your favorite Windows application on a Linux system or help you to run virtual PC on any Operating System.
You are welcome to share if you know more free tools that will help you run your favorite Windows application on a Linux

wine
Wine is an Open Source implementation of the Windows API on top of X, OpenGL, and Unix. Think of Wine as a compatibility layer for running Windows programs. Wine does not require Microsoft Windows, as it is a completely free alternative implementation of the Windows API consisting of 100% non-Microsoft code, however Wine can optionally use native Windows DLLs if they are available. Wine provides both a development toolkit for porting Windows source code to Unix as well as a program loader, allowing many unmodified Windows programs to run on x86-based Unixes, including Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X, and Solaris.

VirtualBox

VirtualBox is an x86 virtualization software package, originally created by German software company innotek, now developed by Sun Microsystems as part of its Sun xVM virtualization platform. It is installed on an existing host operating system; within this application, additional operating systems, each known as a Guest OS, can be loaded and run, each with its own virtual environment. Supported host operating systems include Linux, Mac OS X, OS/2 Warp, Windows XP or Vista, and Solaris, while supported guest operating systems include FreeBSD, Linux, OpenBSD, OS/2 Warp, Windows and Solaris.
Qemu
QEMU is a generic and open source machine emulator and virtualizer. When used as a machine emulator, QEMU can run OSes and programs made for one machine (e.g. an ARM board) on a different machine (e.g. your own PC). By using dynamic translation, it achieves very good performances. When used as a virtualizer, QEMU achieves near native performances by executing the guest code directly on the host CPU. A host driver called the QEMU accelerator (also known as KQEMU) is needed in this case. The virtualizer mode requires that both the host and guest machine use x86 compatible processors.
Bochs
Bochs is a highly portable open source IA-32 (x86) PC emulator written in C++, that runs on most popular platforms. It includes emulation of the Intel x86 CPU, common I/O devices, and a custom BIOS. Currently, Bochs can be compiled to emulate a 386, 486, Pentium/PentiumII/PentiumIII/Pentium4 or x86-64 CPU including optional MMX, SSEx and 3DNow! instructions. Bochs is capable of running most Operating Systems inside the emulation including Linux, DOS, Windows® 95/98 and Windows® NT/2000/XP or Windows Vista. Bochs was written by Kevin Lawton and is currently maintained by this project.
rdesktop

rdesktop is an open source client for Windows Terminal Services, capable of natively speaking Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) in order to present the user’s Windows desktop. Supported servers include Windows 2000 Server, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows NT Server 4.0. Rdesktop currently runs on most UNIX based platforms with the X Window System, and other ports should be fairly straightforward.
XEN
The Xen® hypervisor, the powerful open source industry standard for virtualization, offers a powerful, efficient, and secure feature set for virtualization of x86, x86_64, IA64, PowerPC, and other CPU architectures. It supports a wide range of guest operating systems including Windows®, Linux®, Solaris®, and various versions of the BSD operating systems. The Xen hypervisor is a unique open source technology, developed collaboratively by the Xen community and engineers at over 20 of the most innovative data center solution vendors, including AMD, Cisco, Dell, HP, IBM, Intel, Mellanox, Network Appliance, Novell, Red Hat, SGI, Sun, Unisys, Veritas, Voltaire, and Citrix. Xen is licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL2) and is available at no charge in both source and object format. Xen is, and always will be, open sourced, uniting the industry and the Xen ecosystem to speed the adoption of virtualization in the enterprise.
